Premium Bloody Experience: Overlook Hotel
After going through lines of shrubs and winding roads, we have finally arrived at Overlook Hotel. Established in 1909, the hotel is over three-hours ride away from Denver. With its isolated location in the Colorado Rockies, the hotel is popular with travelers who long for solitude, especially writers.
The hotel’s lobby is designed in bloody red, while its Colorado Lounge takes on a Native American feel. The design is inspired from the fact that the location used to be a graveyard for the Native Americans who had been killed in a massacre.
The hotel is famous for the snow view, but the staff are proud of its maze. Built with locally made hedges, the maze has a long history. The hotel manager Stuart told me, it takes even him at least an hour to finish the maze.
After the maze, I signed off a delightful day with a glass of iced bourbon at the Gold Ballroom. Feel a bit tipsy, I walked through a long corridor decorated with old photographs of the hotel and returned to my room 237. I could hear a woman’s piercing laugh from the bathroom, no wonder the hotel is popular with horror novelist. Perhaps I should start writing a horror fiction like Stephen King. Wish me luck.
Note: the hotel opens from mid-May to the end of October every year. During winter, it is closed due to thick snow; however, a part-time caretaker will stay to look after the hotel.
