NJ, his wife Min-min and their two kids are a typical middle-class family, sharing their Taipei apartment with Min-min's elderly mother. NJ is a partner in a computer hardware firm which made big profits last year but will go bankrupt soon if it doesn't change direction. He warms to the idea of teaming up with Ota, an innovative designer of games software in Japan, and enjoys spending time with the charming and urbane Japanese man. Things start to go wrong for the Jians on the day that Min-min's brother Ah-Di gets married. That's the day when Min-min's mother suffers a stroke and is rushed to hospital in a coma from which she may never awaken.

About the Director

Edward Yang was a Taiwanese filmmaker. He rose to prominence as a pioneer in the Taiwanese New Wave of the 1980s, alongside fellow auteurs Hou Hsiao-hsien and Tsai Ming-liang. Yang was regarded as one of the leading filmmakers of Taiwanese cinema. He won the Best Director Award at Cannes Film Festival for his 2000 film Yi Yi.

The Cinematheque・Passion is located at Travessa da Paixão which is a narrow and romantic bystreet branching off the famous World Heritage Site "Ruins of St. Paul's Cathedral" (the "St. Paul's Cathedral Site") in the Historic Centre of Macau. A three-storey building equipped with ticket office, screening room, control room, film information room and exhibition space.
